Intel hardware is, generally speaking, extremely reliable. Every processor and chipset has some degree of bugs, but these issues rarely become critical flaws that jeopardize a product.
The Intel Atom C2000 Series Bug – Why it is so quiet
Although the Cisco products with this component are currently performing normally, we expect product failures to increase over the years, beginning after the unit has been in operation for approximately 18 months. Once the component has failed, the system will stop functioning, will not boot, and is not recoverable. This component is also used by other companies.
So how does this link back to Intelgiven that Cisco declined to name a vendor? Sharp-eyed boffins at The Register spotted an errata notice Intel issued in January, Implication : If the LPC clock s stop functioning the system will no longer be able to boot. The problem appears to affect all current steppings of the C product family.
While a platform fix has been identified, many manufacturers are choosing to recall products altogether rather than apply it.
Cisco has announced that it will proactively replace hardware that was still under warranty or any other type of valid service contract as of November Hardware will be replaced whether it has already failed or not.
ServeTheHome did some digging into the situation and found multiple vendors willing to acknowledge being affected by the issue: Cisco, Netgate, QCT, and Supermicro all acknowledged the flaw — but not the cause. ServeTheHome states that it has spoken to eight separate vendors, none of whom were willing to acknowledge which supplier was responsible. Multiple vendors cited NDAs with their suppliers that prevented them from identifying the source.
Not many companies have the clout to force multi-billion dollar corporations to kowtow to its desire for secrecy. If you have Avoton or Rangeley hardware deployed for any reason, including as a component in embedded systems or networking hardware, we recommend contacting the vendor to determine whether replacement hardware is required or available.

Did someone tried to fix this bug? I use home license, so I don't have any agreement with Sophos. Best regards. In reply to Marcelo Clare :. Try an idea of Andreas.
In reply to RobertRoskaric :. Thanks for the information. Please see the picture of the Nuvoton chip. I have tried to remove the battery and start the unit again without success.
Hello, on this new pictures is visible, that pin 15 is connected to open pin in fact in two open pins and one closed pin which I think goes to C yellow dot. Need better picture of red square. From yellow point it goes up on open pin then right need better picture to closed pin capacitor, resistor and then left open and left open and finally to pin 15!
Red dot is 3. I'm not responsible for any way!! It should be easy enough to test though. If you have a dead one then the C bug is definitely a possibility, but there are plenty of other ways hardware can fail : The one I am looking at right now started crashing every few days at first, then every few hours, now it won't POST. Lack of POST is definitely the defining symptom of C fault can't load BIOS from flashbut the crashing out with increasing frequency isn't, so I think my device may actually have a different fault.
Also mentioned some hints regarding the easy fix for the synology boards. Also helped a friend of mine to fix his syno aswell, which is also back to life. The issue i have with my UTM is most probably the same issue since it behaves like the syno did. So i guess my does only have the c2xxx bug and not any other issue.
If someone of you needs any more pictures In reply to Michael Arlt :. The problem that we have at the moment is the lack of schematics to be able to identify where to install the jump to fix the c bug. Im not experienced with electronics, measuring and soldering stuff at all.
So the only thing i can offer to you guys are informations i probably get. Lets see, if i get something back from them. At least i was asking them kindly for the schematics, but i doubt the will provide. I didn't trace anything yet, just desoldered and made some photos so far, nothing else If anyone sees a solution to our problem I got also a second SG as well with the same error Just PM me. In reply to DanielSchmitt :. I didn't try it yet, but I will in the next days and report back.
I uploaded your pic as well, so the forum does not rely on your google link, if thats okay for you? In reply to Harald Meier :.Several STH readers will notice that we had downtime last evening. It sucks. Almost everything is back up, and performing well. This happened. We are in the same data center suite for now as Linode, Android Police and etc. Last evening, the power to the suite was cut.
We do not have official word on what happened, but it took a few hours to resolve. When this suite goes down we are not the only ones impacted:. The outage covered well over an hour, so this is not something that one can realistically fix with in-rack battery backups. Normally, once power resumes, we are back online within minutes while everything boots.
This time was different. There were three additional failures that we found after the power came back on. After we got confirmation that power was back on, and Linode and others who have larger support teams and status pages, were online, we realized something was wrong.
STH was still down.Operation failed first boot apply error 0x8007001f gle
As power was restored we actually had three failures to deal with:. It took about 30 minutes to design and build an emergency firewall appliance and get software loaded then another 2 minutes to make coffee and a minute drive to the data center. We spent a few minutes diagnosing the issue firewall to ensure it was indeed the problem before replacing.
We are not going to name the vendor it was not Supermicro despite the images we are using because it is a known Intel Atom issue. At STH, we have an in-line firewall that is designed to cut traffic when it dies. Given we do not sell products or services on STH, a few minutes of downtime is essentially a rounding error for our application so the safer option is to endure a few minutes of downtime during maintenance.
This time, we simply swapped the old unit out for a Xeon D based solution and got everything running. It was faster than bringing everything up in another data center, then migrating everything back to the original infrastructure.
The STH hosting cluster is actually smaller in anticipation of updating over the next ten days or so. The dual Intel Xeon E V3 node was offline while the site was still running, but when it came back online and everything was back to being balanced STH page load times went from about 2.
What is next for our environment? CPUs and systems are in. We are preparing for an EPYC upgrade next. Stay tuned.Ssl fusionpbx
The switch that went down was going to be replaced anyway, so that is getting a significant upgrade next time.We now have received responses from eight different vendors more inquiries outstanding on the Intel Atom C bug. Intel noted that it needed to set aside a reserve for this bug in their latest earnings call.Snhu cpa
We also did want to note that we now have 22x Rangeley-server and networking products in production. We expect to see more vendors announce solutions as early as this week but wanted to provide a bit of insight as to what is happening.
We also do believe unconfirmed that this may be a reason we recently saw yet another Denverton delay. You can see in the latest Intel Atom C family spec update a new errata. Here is AVR54 which popped up in the latest errata:. Implication: If the LPC clock s stop functioning the system will no longer be able to boot.
Workaround: A platform level change has been identified and may be implemented as a workaround for this erratum. Q: Do you expect these products to fail at 18 months in operation? Other vendors have been slower to announce plans. If you are from a company or know of a company that has publicly disclosed their plans, please let me know e-mail patrick at this domain and we will update this post. Q: Who supplies the impacted component?
As a matter of policy, Cisco stands behind the reputation of our products. We do not intend to publicly name the supplier. Thus far February 7, we have received responses from eight vendors who supply Rangeley products, excluding Cisco. Every single vendor has declined to discuss specifics citing NDA, some called me directly to say they were not responding due to NDA concerns.
We can also see that Intel set aside a large reserve.Synology DS1815+ Totally Died, NOT Pro or Enterprise Service - 732
Our educated guess is that Intel may have tied access to those reserve funds to signing an NDA for not discussing the issue. Since we now have almost two dozen Intel Atom C series machines deployed for months, from 6 different vendors, we feel that this is not going to be the case where every machine fails immediately at 18 months or 36 months.
Assuming this is related to the C bug this would support what we have seen in our small deployments and from other web hosts with thousands installed themselves. At the same time, we do urge manufacturers to have longer-term replacement plans available in the event failures do occur.Discussion in ' Processors and Motherboards ' started by smithse79Feb 6, ServeTheHome and ServeThe.
Biz Forums. Bug in Intel Atom C series processors? Joined: Sep 17, Messages: Likes Received: Most of the discussion so far has been surrounding Cisco equipment that seems to be using these chips. Apparently a lot of their mid to higher-end gear uses them. I'm more concerned because I know a lot of folks around here use them for low-power servers. Has anyone seen much about this outside the Cisco talk?
Patrick Administrator. Joined: Dec 21, Messages: 11, Likes Received: 4, From what I heard this was mostly due to a specific implementation of the chips so I did not think it would impact most of STH readers. I would not be surprised if switch management was not the 1 market for these things. PatrickFeb 6, I've been impressed with Cicso's response once they found out about it.
But Intel's has left something to be desired. Drewy Member. Joined: Apr 23, Messages: Likes Received: Care to elaborate on those "specific implementations"? DrewyFeb 6, Cisco already reserved m for dealing and fixing the issues. Synology didn't react just yet, until today thats is.

Network attached storage NAS specialist Synology has denied reports that hardware based around Intel's Atom C family of processors is dying in droves, claiming to have seen no abnormal error rates in its own implementations. News broke earlier this month that Intel's Atom C family of low-power embedded processors were causing hardware to die due to an issue with the chip's timing hardware. According to research carried out by The RegisterIntel had known of the flaw for at least eighteen months before admitting to the erratum and releasing updated parts which resolved the issue.
The site named Cisco, Netgear, Seagate, and Dell as among the vendors affected by the flaw, along with NAS specialist Synology, but the latter company is denying abnormal failure rates while admitting that there is a hardware flaw. After in-depth investigation, the possibility of seeing accelerated degradation of a certain processor component is rare after prolonged and heavy usage, ' the company has claimed in its statement.
